Target for image links?

I have a few images that I use as link overlays for background images - i.e. I create a blank .gif, upload it as an image, drag it into the exposition, give it an outline, and then turn the whole thing into a link.  This blank / outlined shape then becomes a way to make parts of the underlying image clickable as far as the user is concerned.

However, due to the way the image interface works, I can't choose to make these links open in a new tab. 

That would be very useful!

So: please give an option for image links to open in a new tab!
