footnotes issue

My footnotes, that were working perfectly fine, stopped working properly. Instead of the footnote text, the default page now appears in a small window where footnote texts previously appeared. The sizes of the vindows are correct though (I edited sizes of all footnote vindows so that the footnote text fits neatly into them). In the editor everything seems to be all right as well, with all footnotes correctly linked to the names and phrases in the text.
